Irresistible Portraits: Mission Trip to Matamoros, Mexico

Karen and Buddy recently took a mission trip to Casa Bugambilia in Matamoros, Mexico. They assisted the humanitarian work of Dr. Nancy Rodriguez and Larry Cox. The colonias Casa Bugambilia serves as the home of people who moved from the interior of Mexico to the border hoping to find work and a better life for their children and themselves. Because the work often wasn't there, nor was affordable housing, they built houses on land no one else wanted - a former landfill near an industrial canal. The houses were makeshift, constructed out of whatever material could be scavenged. Slowly, as the community matured and with the assistance of volunteers like you, conditions in the colonias improved. Still, access to clean water, sewers and electricity is unreliable. Recently established colonias have no utilities, and the shelter is often little more than discarded plywood nailed together. Air quality is poor. Quality healthcare is often unavailable. The schools are poor. In short, the colonias are areas of great need - physically and spiritually.

Larry has such an influential place in the community. All the children LOVE him! As they walked through the streets, this little girl approached him. He knew her teacher from school had told her not to bother coming back because she couldn't keep up with the other children. Larry tried convincing her to come to their tutor classes at Casa Bugambilia to catch up.

This is Kayla. She has been adopted by Larry and Dr. Nancy. She was first found at 2 years old, abandoned by her mother. She suffered from brain damage at birth and epilepsy. As you can see, she was crazy about Buddy!

One of the projects they focused on through the week was helping add onto the clinic. They have a clinic where they care for live-in patients. They currently have 15 patients living there. They provide around the clock care from bathing to feeding.

Casa Bugambilia provides a classes for children two times a day. The classes are open to anyone. The children that fall behind in class or have any learning disabilities are told not to come back to the regular schools in the community. The tutor classes allow these children to catch up and get another chance.

The children's home of Casa Bugambilia helps children of all ages. During Karen and Buddy's stay, doctors were there to care for two handicapped children.

Just a few days before Buddy and Karen arrived, three children - 8 month old, 2 year old, and 4 year old - were abandoned at a laundry mat. They are currently staying at the children's home and they've had no response from the parents. Due to their ages, they're not even sure of their names, other than nicknames from their older sister.

Our hopes are to take a mission team from North Kannapolis United Methodist Church down to Matamoros, Mexico, in 2011. So far, Casa Bugambilia has helped to build 200 houses in Matamoros. The average cost of these houses is $3,000 each. Hopefully we can help build while we're there.

I realize how important it is to help people. We've done vacation bible schools and brought Christ through the word of God on past mission trips. This trip was different; we brought the hands and feet of God to a community that needed help.

Ben and I have enjoyed looking through them this weekend and reliving that wonderful day in August. We're still in awe at how quickly everything flew by, but you captured so many of the events and emotions in your photos that we felt like we were right back in the middle of all the celebrations. :)

For our client showcase in our fall newsletter, we chose Michelle Moore. Karen was introduced to Michelle through another photographer. After reading Michelle's story, we knew she would be a blessing to be a part of Focused on a Cure, our non-profit organization.

We asked Michelle to give us a few words on what it was like to be a part of Focused on a Cure this year. Here's what she had to say...

"It is so awesome to be a part of an amazing and strong group of women, and sometimes I wonder, 'is this really my life, and how did I get here?' The women blow me away with their strength and courage, and I see so much hope and a sisterhood that is hard to explain until you've been a part of it. I suppose a bit like having a twin would be...you can't quite explain the bond, but it is there, and it is strong.

And then there was the tribute to Judie...it was striking and moving and sad and it made me a little afraid, as I have stage IV cancer. As weird as it may sound, it also gave me strength to know that I am not alone, and there are women before me who's battles have ended, but they did it with grace and courage, and yes, I'm sure some fear; and that gives me peace.

I think of all the people who were helping: you, Renda, Karen, Buddy...the whole IP team...you give so much and it is your help that encourages me most. I know some of you have been touched by cancer in your families, but there are other areas where you could be focusing your energies, and yet you choose us, breast cancer survivors. It is humbling that you choose us, you choose me, because that's what it means when you put all your energy into this huge undertaking; you have chosen me...to fight for me, to love me, and do what you can to help me. It sounds selfish when put that way, I suppose, but the point is, you are touching real people, with real lives, and real families. We are not just statistics...we are women (and men) who are benefitting from your hard work, and I know we are all more grafeful than can be expressed. So as simple and inadequate as it sounds, "thank you."

Karen, I can never express what my portrait session meant to me. To be with my children, to be able to see the beauty in us and our relationship...even amongst all the struggles as a mother and wife and fighter, there is love...more than anything, there is love. I will treasure that always, as will my children, I am sure.

My name is Michelle Moore, and this is my story.

I was 37 years old when I was diagnosed with breast cancer for the first time.

We were sitting as a family, with our two children, Jesse and Samantha, watching Saturday morning cartoons, when my son, leaned into me. He hadn’t touched my chest, but for some reason, it prompted me to check my right breast. Immediately, I noticed a pea-sized lump, and below that, a rather large lump. I knew it was cancer. I’m not sure how; I’m not sure why I didn’t think it was a cyst…I had no doubt that it was bad. One of my chemo nurses says it’s women’s intuition; I have my own ideas. Jesse has autism, and he’s truly the sweetest little boy you’ll ever meet. I’ve always called him “my angel” and that day I think God prompted me through my angel. I also think He let me feel this was serious so I wouldn’t delay in getting it checked out. That was Saturday, April 19, 2008.

On Monday, April 21, I made an appointment with my family practitioner. His office always keeps “sick” appointments so he was able to see me right away. Without saying the word “cancer,” he let me know he was VERY concerned, that I needed a mammogram right away, and that things would move very quickly; that the Presbyterian breast cancer team was a “well-oiled” machine and they would handle everything. Though I felt certain it was cancer, I was still not panicked. There were tests to be done before we knew for sure, and everyone around me kept encouraging me that it would be fine. I’m not sure I ever really believed that, but it was not time to freak out…yet.

Over the next several days, I had a mammogram, diagnostic ultrasound, and a biopsy. They had discovered at least one positive lymph node, so they biopsied that as well. Yikes! Let’s just say it involved a rather large needle, a large popping sound, that gross, numb pulling sensation, and NO sedation. Not an experience I wish to repeat.

On Tuesday, April 29, we were called back into the radiologists office. My husband, Richard, and I call it the “cancer” room. There are breast cancer books everywhere, and as soon as you walk in you think, “they can only have bad news for us in this room.” We were right. They had found cancer cells in the breast as well as the lymph nodes. I guess we all always wonder how we would react in those situations. My reaction: “WOW! I can’t believe you actually said the words!” They looked at me like I was nuts. The next hour consisted of them giving us more information than we could process: chemo, radiation, surgery, support systems…..blah, blah, blah….that’s what I heard. Though everyone is fantastic, I would highly recommend that they change it to “We’re sorry, it’s cancer. Go home, process and come back tomorrow…we can answer everything then.” That may not work for all women, but maybe it should be an option. After “cancer,” we didn’t hear anything else.

The next weeks consisted of meeting with the surgeon, the oncologist, and LOTS and lots of tests. CT scans, bone scans, MRIs. Everything confirmed that the cancer was confined to the breast and my lymph node…good news! They did, however, find a nodule on my right lung. They were almost positive it wasn’t cancer, but to be on the safe side my oncologist ordered a PET scan….the daddy of all scans. The test came back, and he was right, no cancer. Most likely it is scar tissue from an infection, or I was born with it. This holds significance later in my story.

At the time, it was important me to keep my breast. I’m not going to give justification….it’s a very personal choice for every woman, and until you go through it, you can’t truly know what choice you would make. That being the case, and because my surgeon felt we could shrink the tumor with chemo first, and then have surgery. This is called neoadjuvant chemotherapy. All it really means is that you have your chemo before you have your surgery. In my case, we were hoping to shrink the tumor enough to do a lumpectomy. My tumor was just over 5cm…it was big.

I was placed on a chemotherapy regimen referred to as TAC. Taxotere, Adriamycin and Cytoxan. It is a rather aggressive regimen because I received all three medications on the same day, once every three weeks. The thing most people don’t understand about chemo is that it is all very individual. It’s based a great deal on your pathology report, but also on your age and general health. Adriamycin is very hard on the heart, so my understanding is that it is generally given to younger women. All I can say is, chemo stinks! I wouldn’t wish it on anyone, and it’s definitely something I wouldn’t want to repeat.

During all of this, I was scared, but for the most part, I felt certain that it would be okay. We knew treatment would take about 7 months, but once it was over, we would get back to our lives. I got through every day thinking, “God has a plan, I don’t know what it is, and I am only one very small part of His plan.” I was tired, and not feeling well, but I had a lot of help and I had two beautiful children to fight for. It was a no-brainer…keep a positive attitude and fight through. I worked as a bartender, I did a couple of photo shoots, and I spent time with my children and husband. I’d like to say this all brought my husband and me closer, but truthfully, I was so busy trying to make everything “okay” that I didn’t let him know just how bad I was feeling. I would get frustrated because he couldn’t read my mind, and I wasn’t telling him what I needed. He acted like everything was fine…and with good reason….that’s what I showed him. I take the blame for all of that…ladies, if you ever go through this, you have to tell your partner what you need and how you’re feeling: they can’t read minds, and frankly, it’s not a skill I’ve perfected either.

We settled into a new “normal” and got through treatment. When it came time for surgery, we found that my tumor had fallen apart instead of just shrinking, so no lumpectomy for me. I opted for a mastectomy with immediate reconstruction. I also had twenty-five lymph nodes removed…only the one was positive. The immediate reconstruction consists of a tissue expander which gets filled over a period of time. Essentially they put it under your muscle and any tissue they’ve had to add (frequently cadaver skin, which I found fascinating) and fill it with saline through a silicone port with a really long needle. Tissue expanders are oddly shaped, nothing like a real breast, and are hard, hard, hard. And uncomfortable. And awkward. And all around unpleasant. Oh, that’s me complaining about the tissue expanders…again. My husband got used to that. I tried not to complain too much throughout this process…but that thing was more than I could handle.

The last phase of my treatment consisted of radiation. Not difficult, but a pain because you have to go five days a week. Also, I got a rather nice burn. Fortunately for me, removing breast tissue and lymph nodes led to numbness in those areas so I didn’t feel it.

I finished treatment on January 22, 2009. It had been a long nine month process, and it was finally over. Relief would seem like a normal reaction, but I didn’t know what to feel. My job for nine months had been to fight cancer, now that it was over I felt….empty.

Throughout this process, my faith had remained strong. I knew where my strength was coming from and I knew I had not done it on my own. Some people say that God doesn’t give us anything we can’t handle. I have a dear friend who says God doesn’t give us anything HE can’t handle, otherwise, why would we need Him? That’s what I choose to believe. He has carried me through more than I could have ever crawled through. I’d like to say that is the end…that it all worked out fine and my relationship with the Lord remained strong. I am ashamed to admit that the end of treatment was the beginning of my anger. I’m not sure what over…I didn’t feel all that sorry for myself, or at least I don’t think I did…maybe that’s not really the truth. I’m still not sure. I just know I was angry…for a long time. REALLY, REALLY angry. I didn’t want to talk to God, and I couldn’t hear Him. Who’s fault was that? It has taken time, but what I am learning is that it’s like I tell my kids, “I may get angry with you, but I ALWAYS, ALWAYS love you. There is nothing you can do that will make me stop loving you.” The same is true for my heavenly Father. I may disappoint Him, I may not always do what I should, but He ALWAYS, ALWAYS loves me. This process has brought me to a truer relationship with God. For me, it’s not always flowery and perfect…sometimes it’s ugly and raw, and it’s where I grow the most.

When this journey started, I said I wanted to be a better person for it. I can’t say that happened, but I can say I learned that I am stronger than I ever imagined. I function well in a crisis. I can keep a positive attitude in spite of adversity. I can laugh at myself and difficult situations but balance that with the seriousness of it all. And I am well-loved. If you ever want to know who your friends are, get cancer. Wow! I was humbled and overwhelmed. Cancer brought me closer to people who are now forever a special part of my life. It also showed me the people I can let go of. That’s okay, too. Now I know who will fight in the trenches with me. I wouldn’t trade that lesson for anything.

As I said, I chose to have a prophylactic mastectomy on the left breast. In June of 2009, five months after treatment had ended, I had surgery and immediate reconstruction. In October of that same year, I had my permanent implants placed. Though they were still somewhat uncomfortable, they were much better than the tissue expanders.

I was disappointed to find out in February of 2010, that my left implant was not sitting properly. The radiation on the right breast was tightening that skin and cause it to move up thus causing the left to appear lower. The left was also moving lower just a bit (a nice way of saying “sagging”) and my plastic surgeon recommended a revision on the left side. Bummer. It wasn’t anyone’s fault and is somewhat common, particularly when radiation is performed. It changes the skin quite a bit and makes it unpredictable. My plastic surgeon calls it the “gift that keeps on giving.” It wasn’t what I wanted to hear, especially since I thought I was finally done. Keep in mind, I had been diagnosed in April of 2008, so this had all been going on for almost 2 years. It had been a marathon and I’m not what you would consider a runner. On May 20, 2010, I underwent my fourth and final surgery.

In a perfect world, that’s where the story would end.

I mentioned earlier, the nodule on my lung. It was not, and still is not, cancer. Most people will tell you oncologists are not betting folks. They are cautious…almost annoyingly so. (No offense, Dr. Lassiter.) Every ache and pain warrants a scan and a lung nodule warrants a yearly checkup CT scan. Thank God. On June 8th of this year, I went for my routine CT scan of my right lung. When I headed to my oncologists office, I had my children with me, and was prepared for the usual, “everything’s fine” diagnosis from my doctor. It was the first time I had gone to his office and not been worried; hence the reason I brought the kids. I figured I’d go in, get the all clear and then we’d head to Chik-fil-a. One of the chemo nurses came in and took the children. At first, I thought they might have been a little irritated that I brought the kids, but I had brought them before. When I asked if everything was okay, she said, “come see me afterwards.” My heart sank to my stomach….not good. I knew it immediately. It was back. The doc came in and sat down, looked at me and said, “we found some spots on your liver….I’m so sorry.” Talk about having the wind knocked out of you. If you know anything about cancer, you know that metastatic disease is not good. There is no cure. Mostly treatment consists of longevity, quality of life and hope that a better treatment comes along. Don’t get me wrong, women can live for several years with metastases, but it is generally considered terminal. Not news you want to hear at 39 years of age, with two young children; now 8 and 5.

I’d like to say I have been accepting and not had moments of feeling sorry for myself. I’d like to say that I’m not angry and that I still know that God has a plan and that I trust that plan. I CAN say, that I know God has a plan and that He loves me. I can say that life is not always fair, especially to young children who face a possible future without their mother and a husband without his wife and friend. I can also say that we will FIGHT.

Three weeks ago, I started another chemotherapy regimen which is part of a clinical study. I am tired but feeling well, most of the time. Once again, I am overwhelmed by the outpouring of love and support; often I feel undeserving, but I was and am undeserving of Christ dying on the cross for my sins, and yet it happened and I am grateful, and humbled and I see His love in so many I meet.

This is not where I pictured my life. There are so many things I would change, and yet there are so many things I have learned that I would not. I am learning to live every day as it comes, and I am appreciating my children more than ever. I have more people who love me than I would have ever thought possible…what a gift! One most people don’t get while still on this earth. I have learned that when we face our own mortality we don’t curl up in a ball; we get up, we go to work, we yell at our kids, and we learn to find joy in the little things. Yes, I know it’s a bit cliché, but it really is true.

I am afraid. I worry how this will affect my children, my husband, my family. I think I would be lying if I said this would all be okay. It’s not fun, it’s not what I want…but it is what it is and the best way for me to deal with it is to take it one step at a time, and do what I have to do. Fight, love, hope and pray. I suppose I should say that everything happens for a reason, and I guess it does, I don’t know. God does. I hope I can bring glory to Him through this battle. If I do, it won’t be through my doing but through His Grace. It is evident in so many places to me.

I tell my children that courage is not doing things without fear, it is doing them in SPITE of the fear. It is a valuable lesson, and one I hope I am living with some level of grace and dignity.

So that is my story, but this is not the end. The Lord ensured that there is no end for me; just a different place for eternity.

Karen had the opportunity to travel with the girls from C.C. & Company Salon and Spa. They were going to NYC for the New York Fashion Week Unite Academy. Karen was there to document their trip, from the Unite Late Night Party tot he streets of NYC.

Karen was recently inspired by another photographer's late night session in Time Square. After 2am is the only time the streets are jam packed with people! So... at 2:30am, they hit the streets to make a statement. Look at this group of stylish ladies!

It's great to see another business owner believing in continuing the education of their employees in order to keep the best quality service for their clients! Great minds think alike!

Irresistible Portraits: The Other Children Winner

It's official! Dr. Trish Johnson of Compassionate Care Veterinary Hospital of Charlotte judged our "Other Children" contestants - all the pets photographed during the month of August. After debating, she chose Miss Gabby, a King Charles Spaniel, and daughter of Chris and Katie Honeycutt. What proud parents they must be.. and happy too! They won a $100 gift card to PetSmart!

Irresistible Portraits: Chevy Summer Event [FOC Fundraiser]

A few weeks ago, we hosted our first Chevy Summer Event as a fundraiser for Jess and Renda's Avon Walk for Breast Cancer. They're both walking 39 miles in about 39 days from now, but they have to each raise a minimum of $1,800 each!

Our Chevy Summer Event was a killer deal! We offered 15 minute sessions with our old Chevy truck and with a $40 donation to their walk, you received an 8x10 portrait and 15% off any additional portraits. What a deal, huh?!

Irresistible Portraits: Photographic Society of the Triangle

Karen was asked to share a marketing seminar with the Photographic Society of the Triangle last week. Monday evening, she shared some insight on what has kept Irresistible Portraits cranking through this hard times. The event was held at the recently renovated Sheraton Imperial in Durham, NC, where the PPNC convention and events are held.

Karen's marketing seminars normally come across as a motivational speech, because as you'll notice, we're not sitting around waiting on our next client. You have to constantly have something to offer and our marketing wheels are always turning.

We've gotten some great feedback from Monday's seminar already.

Irresistible Portraits: Louie & Millie

Laura brought her family's "other children" for a 30 minute session during our August pet sessions. They donated a bag of dry dog food in exchange for the session fee. Here are Laura's kind words...

Hello Karen, Buddy and wonderful IP Staff,

Just wanted to Thank you for all the time you gave to our Louie & Millie for there first pet portraits. We all had a ball! Many thanks for the time Renda gave to me helping us to select and choose print sizes. Its always a difficult decision when you love them ALL! We loved Millie's portrait on the Pet email. She is so sweet and it really shines through on how Karen captures her. And our lil prince Louie looks just like his regal self!

Irresistible Portraits: Missions Fundraisers for NKUMC

As we mentioned in a previous blog post, the fundraiser that Karen photographed last Sunday benefited missions for North Kannapolis United Methodist Church. After doing some research, Buddy found Juntos Servimos - Together We Serve, a non-profit 501(c)(3) in Matamoros, Mexico. Their mission: Serving people in need in Mexico by eliminating barriers to physical and spiritual wholeness, one community at a time!

Juntos Servimos has established a community of volunteers, Casa Bugambilia, dedicated to serving the residents of the colonias in the areas of medical care and education. Casa Bugambilia provides:

Shelter and medical care for the ill and abandoned to allow those persons medical treatment with dignity and reunification with their family and home community when possible.
Treatment for those presently untreated for diabetes, a disease that disproportionately impacts the colonias.
Education support, both in the classroom and financially, to provide the children of the colonias the surest path to escape poverty.
Construction and renovation of shelter to provide a healthy physical environment for living, healing and study.
Shelter and care for children with special needs who have been abandoned by their families or whose families lack the physical, emotional or financial resources to care for them.

In other words, thank you to all who participated in the fundraiser on Sunday. We raised a total of $1,500 towards the trip to Matamoros!

Irresistible Portraits: Gilbert-Wells Wedding [08.14.10]

Last Saturday, Karen, Renda, and Tara photographed the wedding of Meredith Gilbert and Ben Wells. The ceremony was held at the Wait Chapel on the Wake Forest University campus, which is a GORGEOUS wedding venue!

Meredith and Ben are so in love. It was evident in the way they look at each other. This image is priceless!

They were all smiles... all day!

Irresistible Portraits: Dog Food, School Supplies, & Missions

We had a busy week at Irresistible Portraits last week. As you know, the entire month of August, we're celebrating "The Other Children" by photographing your 4 legged family members! Instead of session fees, we're accepting dog food donations which will be given to the Cabarrus Humane Society.

It's only the 16th of the month and we're accumulated a LOT of dog food already! Luke has been sniffing the bags, but, ironically, he hasn't torn into them yet. (He tends to have a few Marley traits in him every now and then.) Of course, he was more than willing for this image though!

Last Friday was Freebie Friday! We offered 15 minute sessions in exchange for school supplies. The United Methodist Women from Karen's church, North Kannapolis United Methodist Church, are collecting school supplies for the local schools. We're going to add to their donations for our local school system.

Millie was not really thrilled with the school supplies. She wanted to lay in the dog food with Luke... but she did say THANK YOU for all the donations!

Who needs a day of rest? Not Karen!

Sunday, she photographed a portrait fundraiser to raise money for a mission trip to Mexico that NKUMC is putting together in September. Church families and friends of the church families reserved 10 minute sessions throughout the afternoon. They raised almost $1,500 in one afternoon!

And before you know it, it's Monday again! We're busy bees around here. Good luck keeping up with us!

IP Wedding: Young-Gilmore [07.31.10]

Tara and Renda photographed Carly and Derek's big day recently in Salisbury, NC. According to Tara, "If ever there were classes for brides and grooms on how to approach their wedding day with relaxation and 'coolness,' Carly and Derek would be the ones to teach it." They were very open to spending a little extra time after the ceremony photographing in downtown Salisbury. Photography was a priority for Carly and she was excited about every idea! A little extra goes a long way!

Irresistible Portraits: Breast Cancer Survivors of Stanly Regional Medical Center

Earlier this year, we were approached by a long time client of ours and employee of Stanly Regional Medical Center. She was assisting with the planning and grand opening of the new Breast Center at Stanly Regional. She had seen our Focused on a Cure exhibit of breast cancer survivors and was interested in a similar display at their new facility, but featuring employees of Stanly Regional who had won the battle against breast cancer themselves. We were thrilled at the opportunity.

"We've only been open for a little over a week and we've had so many people stop by to see the survivor portraits," says Erin Martin, Director of Imaging for Stanly Regional's Breast Center. "They love our new space, but the portraits just evoke such inspiration in patients and visitors especially since so many know these survivors as employees and familiar faces of the hospital."

Irresistible Portraits: A+ Report Card Sessions

We offered complimentary 30 minute sessions to any student with an A+ report card a few weeks ago. Here were a couple of our gifted IP children that took us up on our offer!

Amelia finished 1st grade at Park Ridge Christian School and used her A+ report card to have an updated portrait of her and her sister, Claudia!

Kayla just finished her freshman year at South Rowan High School. She was proud to tell us she's 2nd in her class!

Good job girls! Keep up the good work!

We're back from our summer vacation and Karen is ecstatic about sharing a sneak peek of the beach sessions she photographed during her week "off." We had five beautiful families to photograph - three at Sunset Beach, NC and the other two at Bald Head Island, NC.

IP Wedding: Myers-Doby [06.26.10]

Allison Myers and Mark Doby were married on Saturday, June 26th, in Winston Salem, NC at the Ardmore Baptist Church. Tara was there to record every detail of their day! Allison was absolutely gorgeous. Her eyes are breathtaking!

These newlyweds are true Carolina fans. From the wedding colors being carolina blue to their exit in the "Heel Raiser." Judging by the body parts in the back of the carolina themed hearse and the driver wearing a UNC football helmet, we were afraid for their safety on the ride to their reception at the Forsyth Country Club. (Just Kidding!)

IP Wedding: Stiles-Lovelace [06.26.10]

Okay.... we admit we're a little behind on keeping you updated! We just returned from our summer vacation (July 5th - 9th), so now we're playing catch up. You'll accept our apology after you see these fabulous wedding images... promise!

On Saturday, June 26th, Christine Stiles and Nick Lovelace were married at Saint James Lutheran Church in downtown Concord, NC. The exterior of this old stone church is PERFECT for photography... and having a gorgeous couple to photograph helped too!

This image has a lot of significance to Christine's family. They have the same image of Christine's great-grandparents exiting the front of St. James Lutheran after their ceremony many years ago. Our job was to duplicate it! This is a wonderful tradition to continue...

The wedding party was so much fun! They rode a trolley from the church to the reception and Karen rode with them. She photographed some great candids of everyone preparing to celebrate at the Cabarrus Country Club!

Chelish Moore Flowers worked her magic once again. The flowers were a gorgeous colorful mixture to add a splash of color since the ladies wore black. And the country club looks amazing! Paper lanterns hung outside the entrance and accented the dance floor. It was gorgeous!

Shortly after the wedding, we received a thank you card from Nancy (Christine's mom).

Words cannot express my heartfelt appreciation for you all. The calm and efficiency in which you perform your job is truly a gift. Christine, Nick, and I fell so great about your contribution to their special day. We thank you so much for all your many efforts and for helping us along the way.

Irresistible Portraits: A Gift for Mom

We want to share unique portrait ideas with you and this is one of the first that came to mind...

We photographed Holly's bridal portrait in November. Not only was she a GORGEOUS bride, but such a sweet girl to work with! We could tell from the beginning that her and her mother were very close. After Holly's projection appointment to view her bridal images, she called us to say she wanted to order an 8x8 coffee table book to give as a gift to her mom. We mentioned sharing some quotes that were personal to her and even a letter to her mom.

Tara designed a beautiful book using Holly's favorite images and quotes along with some heartfelt words from Holly to her mom. It's enough to make you cry! Here's a few of the spreads from the coffee table book.... You can see the entire book on our facebook fan page.

After the wedding, we received this sweet thank you card from Holly's mom.

Words cannot express my surprise and love I felt when I opened my special gift from Holly. Thank you so much for all the special attention you gave Holly in helping her with my book. I will treasure it forever. You guys are wonderful and I can never thank you enough for everything.

Irresistible Portraits: Photography Class Benefiting Focused on a Cure

Karen has been involved in teaching other professional photographers for years, which is how she earned her degree of photographic craftsman through Professional Photographers of America in 2006. We're always thinking of different ways to earn money for Focused on a Cure, so we thought.... why not host a seminar for professional photographers at IP? We can share how we do everything from marketing photographing to workflow and sales.

We hosted the all day seminar last Tuesday at Irresistible Portraits! Karen began the day by photographing a few different sessions to show the other photographers indoor and outdoor lighting along with interaction with the children! Here's a few of our favorites from the sessions...

Irresistible Portraits: Arnette-Flachs Wedding [06.12.10]

Patricia Arnette and Bruce Flachs had a small, intimate ceremony at the Duke Mansion in Charlotte, NC on Saturday, June 12th, 2010. Patricia chose Tara Molles (Irresistible Portraits' Associate Photographer) as her wedding photographer. Tara was assisted by Lauren Hutchinson as a second photographer during Patricia and Bruce's special day.

This was a second marriage for the bride and groom, so their children accompanied them as their wedding party. Patricia's daughters, McCall and Caroline, were their bridesmaids and Bruce's sons, Kyle and Davis, were the groomsmen.

The Duke Mansion has so many photographic opportunities! Everywhere you look, there's a beautiful image! Tara wanted plenty of time to photograph at this gorgeous venue and mentioned Patricia seeing Bruce before the ceremony. Patricia was excited at the opportunity, so the couple had their first moment just before the image above. Emotions are freeflowing when it's a private first moment like this. Tara and Lauren did an amazing job at capturing every detail.

Irresistible Portraits: Benbow-Cisowski Wedding [06.12.10]

Mary Benbow and Ted Cisowski married Saturday, June 12th, 2010, at First Presbyterian Church in downtown Concord, NC. Karen, Renda, and Jessica were there to capture all the details of their big day.

First Presbyterian Church is one of the most beautiful churches in this area and it's music to IP's ears when a bride mentions holding their ceremony there! Not only is the exterior of the church gorgeous with archways and a courtyard, but next door is a gorgeous building where the girls get ready.

Ted is a major in the marines, so we had the pleasure of working with men in uniform all day! They were a great group of guys to work with. We want to thank all the men and women who serve this country!

They had a grand exit after the ceremony. "Kiss to Pass!"

Their reception was held at the Embassy Suites Concord. This is a beautiful venue... then again Chelish Moore Flowers can make anything beautiful with her talent!

We were blessed to work with some very established vendors during Mary and Ted's wedding day. KA Studios documented their day and Kim McIlwaine (of The Bride's Choice) directored the event.

Irresistible Portraits: Garden Renovation Progress

Earthworks Landscape Design is still working their magic in the garden and making great progress! This is the new home for the truck at the bottom of our garden and the new gravel road that leads to the area.

The ponds were overgrown with plants and lily pads, but they've been cleaned and look fresh for the duck sessions!

They've started some gorgeous stone areas in the garden. This one will be a set of steps and stone area surrounding the gazebo.

There's more supplies to be put in their place... and we're looking forward to the final product!!

IP Wedding: Argo-Dunkin [05.29.10]

Ashley Argo and Matthew Dunkin of Lawrenceburg, Tennessee said their wedding vows on Memorial Day weekend in South Carolina. They met in law school and the love story began. When Ashley came to IP inquiring about wedding photography, she said one of her friends had told her, "Whatever you do, don't skimp on photography. It should be a priority!" Ashley chose Tara as her wedding photographer and she'll never regret that decision.

Their ceremony was held at St. John's United Methodist Church in Fort Mill, SC, and the minister said of all the ceremonies he had officiated, this one was filled with so much love! Then their reception was held at McBryde Hall on the Winthrop University campus in Rock Hill, SC, where Evan Eudy did his magic. WOW... to the flowers! This was an amazing venue. The shape of the building allowed for long dinner tables running the length of the building accented with round cocktail tables. The band was awesome - Deja Vu of East Coast Entertainment. The cake was fantastic (according to Tara and Becca). Ashley even wore an adorable apron while cutting the cake. CUTE IDEA for future brides!

Irresistible Portraits: Upcoming Beach Photography

It's warm outside and we're ready to stick our toes in the sand! Our beach photography sessions start this weekend - June 4th and 5th. We have weekends throughout the summer that we offer beach sessions on Friday and Saturday evenings at Sunset Beach, NC. We wait until late afternoon, early evening to photograph so the light is PERFECT and the sun is setting!

Here are some product ideas we have for beach photography....

Irresistible Portraits: Garden Renovations

Karen and Buddy have decided to invest in renovating the portrait garden this spring. The work began yesterday with removing old fixtures and clearing more land.

Our old chevy truck has a new home at the bottom of the property rather than beside the studio. And moving an old truck that doesn't start is INTERESTING....

For a while... we have to look past the muddy tracks, but the garden is still open for portrait sessions.

We appreciate the hard work the guys of Earthworks Landscape Design are putting into the garden and we can't wait to see the finished garden!

Irresistible Portraits: Location Portrait Sessions

We've had a lot of interest in location portrait sessions lately. We're happy to explore new locations. It seems to get the creative energy flowing around here! All the locations have been gorgeous and we wanted to share them with you. Maybe you've been thinking of a family portrait at your home or at a location that's personal to your family. This may give you some inspiration to schedule the session!

This was Meredith and Ben's engagement session in Winston Salem, NC at the Graylyn International Conference Center. The architecture is BEAUTIFUL and Karen could have photographed ALL day there if we would have let her!

Karen photographed the Lanning family at their home on Lake Tillery last weekend. They photographed a variety inside and outside their home and the images are STUNNING!

The Reed family lives on their farm in Mount Ulla, NC. The kids love playing outside barefoot and the perfect place for their family portrait was there - on the farm!

Honestly, this was Karen's idea to go to an alley in downtown Kannapolis, NC for this portrait session. Madeline is a dancer at heart and after hearing her talk about dance, Karen asked her if she'd like to go to this location... just to play and see what they could come up with. Of course, she agreed and jumped at the chance! Her mom fell in love with the images and that's all she wrote....

The Blair family has been planning a family portrait for a while and definitely wanted to include Carson, their family pet of nine years. Time got away from them and they finally scheduled their family session on the same week that they were moving out of their house! (We can work with last minute changes too!)

The Breast Center at Stanly Regional Medical Center

Through our business, we become connected to our clients and their families. Karen has been photographing Nicole and John Williams and their family for years and even hosted an IP party at their house recently. Nicole approached Karen about helping with the opening marketing campaign for The Breast Center at Stanly Regional Medical Center. The center is scheduled to open June 2010.

Bill Owens, creative director from Zander Guinn Millan, recruited survivors from within the employees of Stanly Regional Medical Center. With a group of seven women, Karen and Renda photographed group and individual images of the survivors at the Williams home a couple weeks ago. The images they choose will be displayed as large portraits around the building within the new Breast Center as well as using them for marketing materials.

Plain or Fancy's Pride & Joy

Gary Sweatt, owner of Plain or Fancy Catering in Kannapolis, NC, has helped us out ALOT with catering different fundraiser events for Focused on a Cure. He's always willing to whip up some delicious treats for us to share at Girls Night Outs, during our Cutest Kid contest, etc. He will also be at the Girls Night Out at Cabarrus Dance Academy on May 21st.

In return for all his help for Focused on a Cure, we asked him to bring in his pride and joy - his granddaughter, Lillie. Here are a few of our absolute favorites from her IP session.

Gary is known around IP for his delicious chicken salad and pimento cheese! We will have them both for sale at the Girls Night Out on May 21st. Stop by his table for a taste test!

Irresistible Portraits: IP's Cutest Kid Contest

Irresistible Portraits hosted their first IP's Cutest Kid Contest in April! They had two days of drop in FREE sessions in mid April, then invited the parents back in to pick their favorite which would be uploaded to the online voting contest. IP had 30+ families show up during those two days.

From April 21st to April 28th, the children and families were supposed to promote voting as much as they could and see how many votes they could earn. One vote equalled one dollar. IP set their goal at $10,000 in votes!

During the week, the parents shared their creative fundraising ideas with us - from lemonade stands and yard sales to auctioning off their relatives for dates!! Needless to say, IP met their goal and a little more! The grand total on the evening of April 28th was $10,175 for Focused on a Cure!!

Jackson Parsons raised the most money totaling to $1303, therefore he is IP's Cutest Kid for 2010! Check out this image with his collection bucket that him and his sister carried while walking the neighborhood collecting from door to door!

We asked Lauren (Jackson's mom) to share her fundraising story with us...

The Focused on a Cure foundation hits home for our family being that Jackson's Nana is a 15 year breast cancer survivor. So when IP's Cutest Kid Contest came across my facebook events with all proceeds going to FOC, we were determined to raise as much money as we could. Who knew dressing a little boy in pink and sending him door to door could raise so much money. We set our goal at $1,000 and started raising money.

With the help of his big sister McKinlee, Jackson raised over $100 in our neighborhood asking people to donate money for "breath cancer." People were melting in their hands as they stood there with their bucket and sign. We also set up buckets at his pre-school, consigned clothes, sold our couch, took a class field trip to the fire station, raffled a Mary Kay basket, and asked just about everyone that walked past us.

Friends and family all over the US sent donations through the mail and online. It was amazing to see how supportive everyone we spoke with was. We are very grateful to have such wonderful family and friends. I am so proud of Jackson for being such a good sport, wearing so much pink, and being so excited everytime someone else gave him money. I am also thankful that this contest allowed me to teach my children about donating and giving back.

Thanks you to the IP family for starting this foundation and thank you to our wonderful family, friends, and everyone that helped us exceed our goal and raise $1,303 for Focused on a Cure.

Professional Photographers of Michigan - Essentials for Women

Karen was invited to speak at PPM's Essentials for Women conference in Petosky, Michigan a few weeks ago. She was invited to share her experiences with Focused on a Cure and fundraising through her photography business - Irresistible Portraits. At the last minute, she was given the opportunity to share her tricks and advice for photographing unique maternity and newborn portraits. She was thrilled to do both!

Karen has photographed the Blackwelder family for years. When Tonya and Michael decided to tie the knot, Michael's mother, Donna, came straight to IP! It's an honor to be considered a family's photographer, not to mention being included in the biggest day of a couple's life.

Tonya and Michael chose a GORGEOUS venue - Dennis Vineyards in Albemarle, NC. The weather was absolutely perfect with overcast skies. They wrote their own vows to go along with their non-traditional wedding. Then they surprised everyone with a choreographed first dance which caused an uproar in the reception hall! Needless to say, they were a fun couple to work with!

Holly Brawley and Kelly Dowdy said their vows on Saturday, April 24th, at Bethel Presbyterian Church in Cornelius, NC. They had been dating for nine years and we received an email from Holly on January 8th of 2009 saying "Well ladies... it finally happened. Can't wait..." We had photographed one of Holly's best friend's weddings and she knew she wanted an IP wedding!

PPNC Convention 2010: VIVA PPNC!

PPNC (Professional Photographers of North Carolina) held their annual convention last week. Karen was in charge of the print competition this year. Friday we arrived and joined forces with the print committee to check in everyone's print cases. Each photographer is allowed to enter up to six images into the print judging.

Here we were showing off our white gloves (no one want fingerprints on their competition prints)...

Saturday after the judging was finished, we headed to the Saturday night party - VIVA PPNC! With a Vegas theme, we dressed up and decorated with lights, feathers, sequins and slot machines.

Monday evening, the ladies of PPNC hosted a benefit dinner. They waited tables and all their tips were donations to the foundation. They raised about $3,100 in one dinner!!!! This was a memorial to the members of PPNC who passed in 2009.

Then Tuesday night, the convention wrapped up with the awards banquet. Karen announced the awards as the photographers received everything from "3rd place" in each category to "best of show."

Karen attended a seminar in Paola, Kansas recently to study with the talented Julie Klaasmeyer, Lori Nordstrom, and Kay Eskridge - three very successful women in the photography industry!

There were about 30 other photographers from all around there to take in as much inspiration as they could!

Each of the speakers had so much knowledge to share. Karen definitely brought home a great idea/technique from each lady!

Last Friday, Karen and Jessica headed to Saint Petersburg, Florida for SYNC [Senior + Youth National Conference]. The photography industry changes and evolves every day. As business owners, digital artists and photographers, SYNC has committed to be the conference that will help us evolve and grow with the ever changing teen generation.

H&H Color Lab [our choice for quality products] sponsored an opening night show on Friday evening. They chose 15 of their talented customers to share something valuable with the audience. Karen's choice of topic was Giving Back. She spoke of finding a purpose and a cause that you're pasisonate about... and see where it takes you. She had a lot of great response. Throughout the weekend, other photographers approached her asking for ideas and sharing their thoughts.

We've put together a video of our "best of 2009." As we look through the images, we see these unique, yet perfect expressions. We see our furry best friends. We see families that have become dear to us. We wanted to take the time to say thank you to all our clients. Western Carribean Cruise

After another year of hard work, we decided to treat ourselves and our staff with an exciting vacation - a 7 day cruise through the Western Carribean. It was just what we needed to wind down after the rush of the holidays. We relaxed and prepared for an even busier year ahead of us!

On January 3rd, we boarded the Norwegian Jewel in Miami, Florida (which was abnormally cold!)

Our first stop was Roatan, Honduras. Here's the group at the top of a mountain, overlooking the ocean. Beautiful site.

We ziplined through the Honduran forest, which was amazing!

Our second stop was Belize City, Belize. We took a tour most of the day with a local man from Belize. He told us all the history of Belize and showed us around.

Our third stop was Costa Maya, Mexico. This is a great place to spend the day on the beach... if the weather is cooperating.

And our last stop was Grand Stirrup Cay, Bahamas. Unfortunately the weather was working against us and we weren't able to tender to the island. But there's always a back up plan. We spent the day watching movies, attending shows, and relaxing on the ship!

This was the perfect recipe for us to relax after the holidays and before we hit the ground running for 2010.

Christmas Caroling with NKUMC

North Kannapolis United Methodist Church along with its 4 legged members went Christmas caroling last Sunday at three local nursing homes - Five Oaks, Transitional, and Morningside. Christmas caroling can brighten anyone's day, but the furry ones were just as impactful. The faces lit up with excitement when Millie, Luke, Pixie, and Lil Bit came around the corner!

Winter Wonderland Children's Event for the Cabarrus Boys and Girls Club

Last Saturday, Karen volunteered in photography at the Festival of Trees benefiting the Cabarrus Boys and Girls Club. The Miriam Hayes Society hosted this 4 day event at the Historic Concord Hotel.

Saturday's theme was Winter Wonderland Children's Event. The hotel was filled with dozens of gorgeous, themed decorated trees. There was face painting, crafts, and visits with Santa.

Karen photographed each little one as they told Santa all their wishes for Christmas morning. Here's a couple cuties to share...

This cutie even brought the catalog to show Santa. No mistakes this year, Santa!

Cook-Zoltanski Reception

I'm sure you remember Mark and Miranda Zoltanski from our recent destination wedding. They held their reception for all their family and friends at the Waterford Hall at Galway Hooker Irish Pub in Cornelius, NC.

This venue is a great location in the lake area. The Waterfod Hall has a unique, upscale atmosphere.

The guys were jealous of Miranda's attitude in her bridal portrait. Needless to say, none of them could beat hers, but Pappaw was the closest! (To see more of Miranda's bidal images, check out our facebook fan page at www.facebook.com/IPbyKG.)

Check out this fabulous cake! It was as delicious as it looks. Nona Sweets (in the University area) was responsible for this creation.

The night consisted of dancing, singing, and "oohing and ahhing" over the couple's images from their big day in Key West. It seems as though everyone had a great time celebrating with the newlyweds.

It's been an absolute pleasure working with Miranda, Mark, and their families throughout their engagment and wedding festivities! We hope it doesn't end here. We want to photograph little Zoltanskis in the future!

The Jonathan Foundation

If you aren't familiar with the story of Jonathan Thacher, take a look at our blog post from last August.

Sonja, Todd and Joseph Thacher have established the "JONATHAN FOUNDATION" to continue his outreach. This year they are beginning a "LEGACY ORNAMENT COLLECTION" this of course being the inaugural ornament, with different ornaments being offered in years to follow.

The foundation is being established in his memory to the friendly and the friendless...and will be offered for opportunities for community grants related to programs for children or the needy in the community. A scholarship will be awarded to a senior for the class of 2013. This of course being the year Joseph graduates.

We have some ornaments at our studio. The cost of the ornament is $8.00 or two for $15.00. Stop by and take a look. We want to support the Jonathan Foundation as much as we can!

Santa Portraits

Santa came to Kannapolis on Sunday to visit all the good little girls and boys! He stopped by to get everyone's last minute wish lists and to have a "talk" with some children who were in limbo between the naughty and the nice list!

Everyone had their portraits made with Santa and then he gave each child an early Christmas gift!

Some were a little scared of the big man in the red suit, but what an adorable Christmas card that will be.

Santa said he enjoyed himself. He's looking forward to next year's IP visit. He mentioned that he's looking at a vintage Santa suit for next year, so next year's Santa portraits might be very unique!! We're looking forward to it!

Remembering Bryan

Dear Karen,

I would like to take this time to thank you for all you have done for us. As you know, on January 25, 2006, Tim and I lost our son, Bryan, at the age of 21. Before that time, we thought we had all of the time in the world to have family portraits made. It is my regret I thought I had a lifetime to do this. You always seem to think there will be a tomorrow. Sometimes, that is not the case.

The day I came to your studio and spoke to Renda was the day I realized we could have portraits made and still have a small part of Bryan show through. I have never been as excited as the day we came to have our pictures taken. Through discussions with you and Renda about different ideas, Tim and I brought Bryan's most prized belongings. I had never seen anyone so passionate about their work as you. It amazed Tim and I, both the effort, time, and love you showed taking those pictures reflecting our life with Bryan and the love of our family. These portraits and book will never be able to replace Bryan but through them we can remember the great times we had. They will also reflect the love we will always have in our hearts for Bryan.

I will never be able to thank you enough for what you have done. Between you, Renda, and Jessica, we felt as if we were part of a family. You all made it so easy to relax and enjoy this special time. I hope sometime in the future I can repay the favor. I know God had a hand in us meeting. It is through him all things happen and are possible. I was struggling trying to find a way to show everyone who Bryan was and with God's help and your creations this is becoming a reality.

Cook-Zoltanski Wedding

Miranda Cook and Mark Zoltanski tied the knot on Saturday, November 6th, in Key West, FL and we were there to capture every detail! The wedding festivities began on Royal Caribbean's Jewel of the Seas on Friday. The ship docked in Key West on Saturday morning bright and early and their wedding day began.

Miranda is a very detail oriented person, so she chose the best wedding planner in Key West - Julie Shreck of Simply You Weddings. Julie had the day planned perfectly beginning with Miranda's hair and make up at one of Key West's finest salons - Marie Pierre.

Miranda carried this horse shoe throughout the day for good luck. It was wrapped with a ribbon used to package their wedding invitations. The leaf in the center of the horse shoe was a keepsake from a trip Mark and Miranda took to Central Park seven years ago. Miranda dried the leaf and used it to ornament her bouquet.

Miranda rocked these fabulous blue heels which fit her personality to a tee!

The ceremony took place on the North Pier at the Westin over looking the blue water.

This day was long awaited after seven years of dating. Mark and Miranda both smiled from ear to ear all day long!

It's great to see two people so in love and happy.

After the reception on the rooftop of the Westin, we quickly photographed around the area where the ship was docked. Key West is known its Banyan trees, so it was perfect for portraits.

Key West has some of the most unique buildings and architecture. Its a photographer's dream... if we could only stay longer. But you can't sweet talk the captain of a cruise ship. You'll get left behind! (We were close to being left behind!)

Spending the weekend with the Cook and Zoltanski families was an honor. They are most welcoming and friendly people you'll ever meet. We had a great time and enjoyed capturing the memories for the happy couple.

Mark and Miranda will be hosting a wedding reception in town for all the friends that weren't able to make the wedding. We're looking forward to sharing some images from the special weekend with them at the reception.

Wings of Eagles Fundraiser

Only a couple more days before our annual Wings of Eagles Fundraiser at Wings of Eagles Ranch and Therapeutic Riding Center. This is our 3rd annual fundraiser for this ranch. We firmly believe in what they support and look forward to raising money for them each year.

Client Showcase: Miranda Cook & Mark Zoltanski

Why we chose Irresistible Portraits:

Foremost, I just want to take a few moments to say how thankful I am to be sharing this story and for the grace that God allows us to see in all things. When people ask where I am from; my answer is simple, "Here." "My parents are from here, my grandparents are from here, even my great-grandparents are from here." Yes Kannapolis; a small town full of character and history. Even our background is simple; It was here that my grandfather began our family business back in September of 1960, and it was Kannapolis where my father and my grandfather continued to build our business within this small town of friendship and hospitality. We have become the insurance family; busy protecting and advising what we consider to be the most important aspect of every family's past, present and future.

My boyfriend of seven years (Mark Zoltanski) proposed to me back in February. We were both, and still are, overwhelmed with happiness and the most wholesome feeling of gratitude for life and family we have ever experienced. Little did we know we were about to begin one of the coolest intertwining journeys we have ever attempted together- we had to plan a wedding. I had it all figured out. It was going to be easy and things were going to happen just like I had always imagined.

It only took a few months to realize weddings were not that easy- people who own business just like my family did not seem like they were really interested in our love story or our passion for family. But why not, they work in the wedding industry? After plenty of heartbreaks and ego-busters I finally realized that planning a wedding was not as simple as everything else in life. After four months I had no venue, no cake, no dress, no DJ- none of the stuff that everybody else has after four months.

I swore off wedding planning for our fourth of July weekend. Mark and I were having lunch by Lake Norman that weekend, and I remember looking at Mark and saying, "Why can't things just be this simple on our wedding day, no time lines, no expectations, just me, you and the family?"

We both happen to glance at the party boat on Lake Norman, and we both looked at each other and we pretty much knew what the other was thinking, but we just looked and didn't say anything... remember I swore off wedding planning for the weekend.

Since I have the patience of a five year old, I was the first one to be filled with excitement and basically blurt out the simplest plan you could ever imagine... let's take a cruise! In one fell swoop I had just eliminated the need for a cake, a venue, a DJ, and all that stuff people say you have to have. But there was one thing that we did need, a photographer.

We wanted someone who could capture our love and our youth- for these pictures would be passed down generation after generation. I made an appointment with Irresistible portraits just to see- since everyone has always said, "Oh, Karen's good." (lol, they really do)

At first I was hesitant that this would be like every other cookie cutter experience, "where's your venue, what's your date," etc. The difference was that Renda truly listened to what I was trying to create for our vision and took notes the entire time. I knew I was going to call her back, if it was only for those notes she took. Like most brides, the first decision helper I called when I left was my mother, Karen was a no-brainer for Mom. As a matter of fact, she said Karen was who she wanted the entire time. Our decision to go with Irresistible Portraits was the first step in our wedding planning process. I felt a true comfort knowing that things were going to be simple, just like our business. Listen then create a product; advise and then perform.

There was no way to know going into this that things really have turned out to be simple for Mark and I. We have fallen in love with the style and grace Karen and the IP staff have provided. Mark and I have said on multiple occasions we are so relieved and glad that we have chosen Irresistible portraits. Mark and I felt truly free to be together during our engagement session; together like we are at home or anywhere. My father, mother, and grandparents are completely ecstatic about the IP staff sharing this time with us. It is truly a warming experience to know that our memories are in the hands of Karen, Renda, Jessica and the entire team at Irresistible portraits. We have shared so many wonderful moments so far and I can not wait to build the happiest day of our lives with my family and friends. This will be a wonderful occasion and I Thank God for all of the happiness we have as a family. Fall Fundraisers

We've held a couple fundraisers in the past few weeks. The first was for our Avon Walk. Karen photographed about 25 families on a Sunday afternoon in quick 10 minutes sessions and raised $1500 to donate to Focused on a Cure's Avon team - Digital Divas! Then last Sunday, she photographed families from Mt. Olivet United Methodist Church. This church has a group of missionaries that goes to Kenya each year. Last week's fundraiser earned $1000 towards this year's mission trip!

Ponds-Gregg Wedding

Tara & Renda had a double hitter last weekend. On Sunday, they were there to capture the big day for Alicia and Tyrone. This was a very unique wedding with an old hollywood theme. They had feathers, hats, and pearls adorning the wedding party.

Ty and Alicia saw each other before the ceremony. This is one of our favorite images of all time. This was the moment when Alicia turned around to see Ty for the first time! How priceless?!

They walked the streets of downtown Salisbury to find the perfect places to photograph. This couple knows how to work the camera... that's for sure!

Ty and Alicia are so much in love. When they look at each other you can tell that nothing else in the world matters to them at that moment.

The wedding party walked down the soul train line as they were introduced to the party goers. They had some moves up their sleeves!

Sugarman, Alicia's brother, even partied his way his way down the line!

To kick off the open mic celebration that was Alicia and Ty's reception, Alicia sang to her man a little diddy by one Miss Erykah Badu, "Call Tyrone." And boy did she sing it! The guests continued to party even after Tara and Renda left, and with a crowd like that - who knows - the party may STILL be going on!

Burch-Griffin Wedding

Lindsey Burch and Trent Griffin made it official last Saturday in Greensboro, at her parent's house. Although the rain threatened all day, it held out for the ceremony and the rest of the evening.

The girls wore lime green dresses and shoes, which were fabulous for pictures. They traded them for flip flops down the aisle to ensure that no one had to make a visit to the emergency room due to a twisted ankle!

The groomsmen piled into the golf cart (the shuttle from the parking lot) for a quick ride around the yard while Tara and Renda photographed some silly images.

The guests were asked to write blessings on stones as they also signed the guest book. Trent and Lindsey's cairn (a pile of stones traditionally used to mark a place of significance in a journey) grew remarkably over the night. Trent and Lindsey will definitely live happily ever after with the cairn they had!

Something you don't see very often is a wedding band of white ceramic. While Lindsey chose a beautiful diamond band, Trent chose something a little less traditional.

Lindsey is a daddy's girl which made for a few emotional moments throughout the day.

Trent and Lindsey make a beautiful couple and their wedding party was a fun group to work with.

VPPA Meeting

Karen traveled to Danville, Virginia, last week to share a marketing seminar to a VPPA guild meeting. She recently shared her marketing ideas with most of these photographers at our PPNC Proshare Class earlier this year, so she was pressed to come up with some new topics. Her solution: Inspire photographers to separate themselves from their competition. Motivate them to push harder and maintain the "WOW" factor!

The economy is struggling. The industry is struggling. Photographers are downsizing and some even closing their doors to make ends meet. But that's not a reason to save money on marketing or to give up. That means we should market harder and more consistently. "WOW" the customers to that they don't want to save money by going to the amateur photographer down the street.

Cromer-Ward Wedding

Last Saturday, Alyssa Cromer and Zach Ward tied the knot! They were married at Central Baptist Church in Kannapolis where they grew up together. Photography was high on Alyssa's list of priorities, so they decided to see each other prior to exchanging their vows. Tara and Renda were there to capture their special moment.

Alyssa looked stunning in her gown from Hope's Bridal Boutique and check out the groom. He's working his way up to the major leagues. He currently plays for a AA baseball team owned by the Cincinnatti Reds.

How cute is this? Zach wanted to get a practice run of the kissing pose, but the trial run was just as cute as the "for real" pose!

The reception was held at the Rowan Museum in the heart of Salisbury. The traditional architecture was the perfect setting for unique portraits.

Their special day was a beautiful success. Zach is a stickler for being on time, which made Tara and Renda's job a lot easier! They are an adorable couple and we wish me all the best!

Dalton-Harris Wedding

Last weekend, Karen and Renda photographed the wedding of Kristen Dalton & Barry Harris. Kristen and her father are photographers in Danville, VA. Karen was privileged to be asked to photograph their big day. The wedding took place at Sunset Beach, NC.

The rain didn't effect the plans. They held the ceremony inside the beach house and they still managed to get plenty of outdoor images.

Kristen and Barry seem like the perfect match. Karen described it as "awesome to see two people who were meant for each other to finally find each other."

And of course, there was some dancing to be done after the ceremony!

Congratulations to Kristen & Barry! We're so happy for you two! It was an honor to photograph your wedding and we look forward to sharing all the images with you.

GPPA Convention

The GPPA (Georgia Professional Photographers Association) held their annual convention last week in Jekyll Island, GA. Karen was asked to speak to their local association about her "Smart Marketing." She was sponsored by H&H Color Lab and Magnolia Frames.

Check out some of Karen's images in the H&H booth at the trade show. The four images were printed on metal. The left two images are by Lonnie Hoke of Lugoff, SC and the right two are Karen's.

Lonnie spoke on Monday morning about if he knew then what he knows now. During his seminar, Lonnie showed a list of names of photographers who have inspired him along the way and Karen was on it. What an honor!

Then Monday afternoon, after the trade show, it was Karen's turn! She shared all of IP's "Smart Marketing" and told the truth - "You can't complain about not being busy if you're not marketing yourself."

You know IP doesn't do anything average; Karen brought TONS of samples and frames, and everything IP offers - from framed portraits and metal prints to albums, purses, and dance studio products.

During a break, all the attendees had an opportunity to look through the products and samples and ask questions.

Karen always has great giveaways at her seminars. We keep a close relationship with all of our vendors and they're always so supportive of Karen sharing her expertise with others. Karen gave away samples of jewelry, metal prints, pearl canvas wraps, skinny minis (small business cards), and a huge discount on a new website. (Thank you so much to all our vendors!)

H&H always has the most cutting edge products. The metal prints have been a hit, but how cool is this display? This stand was made specifically to hold a combination of metal prints. Here are six 16"x16" metal prints with 4 holes hung together with chain. (Thanks to H&H to an awesome variety of samples!)

At the end of the seminar, Karen shared something dear to our hearts - Focused on a Cure. She told how it began and what it has become. She brought a few of the survivor metal prints with her and also showed a slideshow of the quotes from our survivors' stories. There wasn't a dry eye in the place. She sold some t-shirts and received a few donations to Focused on a Cure! It was awesome to see people to interested and supportive of our cause.

Needless to say, job well done, Karen!

Wilson-Bunting Wedding

Katie Wilson and Joe Bunting tied the knot this past Saturday at St. Mark's Catholic Church in Huntersville. This was actually the first wedding ceremony held at this church, which makes it extra special. Tara and Renda were there to capture every detail of the day!

Katie and Joe ranked photography high on the priority list, so they saved a great amount of time for portraits after the ceremony. They will be very pleased when they see all their images!

The excitement began with the reception! Katie and Joe were announced into the reception with a cheer and line of high fives. Then the groom's brothers led the groomsmen in a Lebanese dance, which involved alot of stomping. As you can see here, Mark wasn't sure of the moves, so he resumed with the "tripod."

Katie and Joe's familes are from West Virginia and Delaware, so it was an event when the DJ played "Country Road." We can't wait to show off the images from that moment.

We had a great time with the new Mr. & Mrs. Bunting! We're looking forward to showing all the images from their big day. IP in Tennessee

We had heard the name Mac Brown time after time after time - always great things. Finally, Karen met Rebecca Brown-Weaver (Mac Brown's daughter) at the Women's Forum held by H&H in Kansas City recently. Karen came home excited and intrigued with her new found friend. They seemed to have similar opinions about photography, the way they run their businesses, and life in general.

So we decided... it was time to take a trip to visit the Browns at Mac Brown Photographers in Lawrenceburg, TN. We arrived in Nashville last Saturday, ate dinner and had a little dose of karaoke in the city, then headed to Lawrenceburg. Rebecca picked us up for church on Sunday morning and treated us as a part of her family! We met Mac and Kathy Brown at church. They took us to eat lunch at a local diner, which was FABULOUS! They showed us around their town and told us neat little stories about their historic area.

We visited their studio Sunday afternoon and we were in awe! They are on top of their game! This visit was a creative inspiration for our group! Our to-do lists have grown and we've got lots of ideas to implement.

Mac shared a few lighting secrets with Karen while we posed! You know we never mind being in front of the camera! :)

On Monday, we hung out at their studio, brainstormed together, and Tara shared a few Lightroom secrets.

We had such a wonderful time with the Browns. Southern hospitality just doesn't cover the generosity they shared with us. They're the sweetest people we've met! We're hoping they can make a visit to NC soon to visit us and we can return the favor!

Monday evening, we headed back to Nashville for a night on the town. We had a delicious dinner at local restaurant, participated in a little karaoke at "Wanna Be's" and stayed in the center of downtown.

We had a blast! We made new friends. We visited an awesome city and we were inspired creatively! What more could you ask for?

Alan was recently diagnosed with cancer of the liver and colon. His battle against cancer began in August. He has recently transferred his caring bridge site to a blog, where he keeps everyone updated on his thoughts and feelings and what's going on in his life. New Hope Women's Ministry

Karen had the opportunity to meet a very passionate woman the other day. She is passionate in her ministry and has an undeniable love for Christ. She is Leigh Ann Loyd - the founder and director of New Hope Women's Ministry. She wanted to share with us about two events that New Hope is hosting this year.

On October 3rd, they will be hosting a Miracle of Life Celebration from 4:00-9:00pm at Village Park on West C Street in Kannapolis. This is a family-friendly celebration with good food, fellowship, an art and crafts corner, fun children's games, and live Christian entertainment. Gianna Jessen, a saline abortion survivor, will be the guest speaker for the evening. Leigh Ann insists you won't want to miss her testimony and how God is using this young woman for HIS glory! All proceeds from the event will go to New Hope Women's Ministry to continue the Lord's work within the community as we have commissioned to do.

The next day, October 4th is the 22nd annual National Life Chain Solemn Assembly where they will gather together for a peaceful and prayerful public witness against abortion. People will line up from Applebee's in Concord to Hilbish Ford in Kannapolis on Cannon Blvd from 2:00-3:00pm. Each church or organization will have a designated place to stand. We all know that this can be a very sensitive subject. Karen was intrigued by Leigh Ann's passion and determination to act on something that the Lord laid heavy on her heart.

Angela's IP Home Party

We had another successful IP Home Party last week. On Thursday evening, Angela Rodgers hosted a party at her home where she invited some of her friends and neighbors to learn more about IP. Karen and Renda brought products to show the women and talked to them about photography. Karen spoke about her passion for photography and its importance. She shared her interest in finding each family's personality and spirit, and capturing that in their portraits.

They told the women about Focused on a Cure and how IP is dedicated to giving back to the community.

For entertainment, they gave some $50 gift cards out to our "contest" winners. Who had been married the longest? Who had the most recent date with their husband and NO kids? Who had the most recent family portrait? Who traveled the farthest to attend the IP Home party?

Home parties are always a lot of fun. We make new friends and meet wonderful women who love photography. We'll soon be photographing all their families and making memories for them as we've done for Angela.

After all the families from Angela's party order from their portrait sessions, Angela will receive 30% of their sales to use towards her future portrait sessions. She can potentially have an entire portrait order and not pay a dime! We've had someone earn up to $1,900 from hosting an IP Home Party.

Each home party host receives a gift from IP in addition to their future portrait order credit. We gave Angela a framed watercolor portrait of her and her husband (aka "Chip") from their recent beach location session.

We appreciate Angela taking the time to host the IP Home party. (It will definitely pay off for her!) And we look forward to getting to know all these new families!

Tybee Island, Georgia

Karen and Buddy recently vacationed for a week on Tybee Island, in Georgia. They rented a house with 5 other couples and enjoyed this beautiful view of the sunsets. The ladies relaxed while the men fished. When we asked Karen how her trip was, she said she slept in until 9am every morning and ate at Paula Dean's. Good trip - in other words!

Brawley-Wessel Wedding - 09.05.09

This past Saturday, Tara and Renda photographed the wedding of Erica Brawley and Andrew Wessel. Erica and Jessica were college roommates and are the best of friends, so as soon as Andrew popped the question, Erica reserved their big day with IP!

Erica and Andrew met when they began working together in Charlotte. Andrew proposed on their one year anniversary and they began their lives as Mr. & Mrs. Wessel on Saturday! The ceremony and reception was held at Firethorne Country Club in Ballantyne. The venue was absolutely beautiful and we couldn't have asked for better weather!

The wedding party was a fun group. All the girls grew up together, even graduated high school together. And the guys were great friends of Andrew's. Three of them drove HOURS from up north to be a part of his big day.

The talented Chelish Moore worked her magic once again! This was already a beautiful building with incredible architecture and details, but after Chelish was done, it looked AMAZING. Erica chose champagne and gold accents to go with the neutral flowers in her reception. Chelish was sure to cover every last detail.

The reception was a blast! Erica and Andrew chose Black & Blue as their band. They were great. The dance floor was packed all night!

Renda was sandwiched by two groomsmen at one point... but it doesn't look like she minded.

It was an honor to photograph Erica and Andrew's special day. They make a beautiful couple and we can't wait to show off all the images!

Back To School Night with the Kannapolis Intimidators

Saturday night, we attended Back To School Night with the Kannapolis Intimidators. We bought tickets for all of our little "Take Me Out to the Ballgame" participants.

Despite the rain, everyone had a great time.... until the bottom fell out. Then it was time to go home.

It was fun while it lasted! Thanks to the families that participated in our Take Me Out to the Ballgame sessions. We had a great time and look forward to our next exclusive sessions! (We have a lot to offer you in September.... so stay tuned!)

Back To School Sessions

We offered back to school sessions the past two weeks. We offered 30 minute sessions in exchange for $20 worth of school supplies. We had a great response and I'm sure our local school system will appreciate everyone who participated!

Beach Photography - August 09

Karen, Renda, & Buddy enjoyed their last trip to the coast (for 2009) this past weekend. Buddy grilled out while the ladies drove to meet the Whittakers and their children and their grandchildren, at Carolina Beach, NC. It's always fun to see extended families gather together; you realize how important family time is when they tell you how far they've driven to be there together!

Saturday, Karen & Renda met the White family at Sunset Beach, NC for their family portraits. We've photographed Whilden & Lauren during different exclusive location sessions, such as Train Day at Spencer Train Museum and our annual fundraiser at Wings of Eagles Ranch. But it was great to get some images as a family, especially with little Harrison.

Mystery Sale Winner

Renae Atkinson was our lucky winner for the Mystery Sale. We photographed Ryker in June for his one year portrait session. Renae ordered a portrait and some images to add into his first year baby album. She reached in to the basket of percentages and drew 100%!!!!

She cried when she saw the numbers on the piece of paper. Renae said this was the best thing that had ever happened to her. She has never won anything in her life, other than a set of ping golf clubs. She said she didn't realize the meaning of those, but she KNOWS the meaning of this!

Congratulations Renae! Thanks for loyalty over the years.

Kannapolis Police Dept

Each year, N.C. Governor's Highway Safety Program puts together a calendar. The images in the calendar are submitted by the cities. Karen was chosen by the Kannapolis Police Department to photograph three of their officers.

The GHSP makes their image choices for the calendar based ont he creativity of the image and location. So, what are two major locations for Kannapolis to be proud of?

Brown-McBryde Wedding

Last Saturday, Kristen Brown and John McBryde tied the knot! Their ceremony took place at Midway United Methodist Church in Kannapolis. The rain held out for the most part and we got some awesome images.

Kristen and John saw each other before the ceremony. John stood with his back turned in the aisle of the church as Kristen approached him. We always love when couples have this private moment. The bride and groom always tend to show more emotion when it's just the two of them (...and us, of course!).

We tested our skills on Saturday and had Tara work on a few images during the reception from earlier in the day. We presented a slideshow of images from the girls getting ready all the way through the ceremony. This was a nice little plus for Kristen and John to show off their images! John Deere Day

Yesterday, Karen photographed John Deere Day as a fundraiser for her church, North Kannapolis United Methodist Church. We scheduled 10 minute sessions throughout the afternoon for church members and friends. We ended up raising $1,400 for a missionary family in Africa. We had a very successful fundraiser and we hope to do it again!

Manicures & Pedicures at C.C. & Company

Adrian from C.C. & Company invited us girls to her salon and spa on Friday afternoon to pamper us! We enjoyed manicures and pedicures from their wonderful staff. They recently renovated their spa area in the salon... It's beautiful and SO relaxing. We were able to chat, laugh, and relax with each other... which is something we don't get to do very often.

We had a great time. This is the PERFECT idea for a bridal party or even a birthday celebration. Get all your girlfriends together and relax while being pampered!

Camp Edge - NKUMC VBS '09

North Kannapolis United Methodist Church held their Vacation Bible School for 2009 this past week. The theme was Camp Edge... experiencing and discovering God everywhere. They enjoyed crafts, recreation, storytelling, missions, classroom activities, and music each night. On Thursday, they went to Camp Cabarrus in Concord. Friday evening, the kids hosted a closing ceremony where they sang all the songs they had learned throughout the week to their families. Then yesterday morning, during the Sunday service, they presented the music to our church family.
